High School Rowing

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

What is a Juniors rower?

Any teenager who is in high school is a qualified Juniors rower, regardless of skill level! Anyone new to the sport starts out as a novice their first year.

Who can join the G2 Juniors team?

We have had juniors from all over the Fort Wayne area with Concordia as our base, we have rowers from Homestead, Carroll, Southside, Blackhawk Christian, Bishop Dwenger, Leo and Angola high schools, along with some being homeschooled. We have a spot for anyone from anywhere here!

What is a Novice?

A novice is anyone who is within their first year of rowing.

What qualifies as JV and Varsity?

JV is anyone who has completed their first year as a novice or has gone beyond the level of novice in their first year. Varsity is anyone who has had 1 or 2+ years of rowing experience or can perform at a very competitive level.

Practices

Our teams all practice at the same time 5 days a week. Monday thru Friday 4:15 - 6:15pm at our G2 Community Rowing Center in Shoaff Park (located at the boat ramp, next to the baseball diamond). We operate during the school year. Fall (mid August to mid October), Winter (January to mid March), and Spring (mid March to mid May).

How do we row in the winter?

We row on rowing machines called ergometers, or ergs. These practices start conditioning for indoor meets on the ergs and to build speed and endurance for our spring racing seasons. Both of which are 2,000 meter race seasons.

What if I want to join in a competitive way but don’t want to row?

We have a position in our sweep boats (8+s and 4+s) called the coxswain, or cox for short. What they do is steer the boat for rowers and shout commands to keep the rowers focused, engaged, and moving faster. A coxswain is a very important part of these boats as they are the driving force on pushing the rowers to be the best they can be and remind them that they can go beyond the limits they think they can go. We also have the option to just row recreationally and to not go competitively.

I have a child in middle school and they would like to try rowing. How can that happen?

We currently run a middle school rowing camp towards the end of June. It’s 5 days long, Monday thru Friday from 9am to 12pm at our Community Rowing Center and is open to anyone from incoming 7th grade to incoming freshman. Outside of the middle school camp, we are currently exploring ideas on how to incorporate middle school rowers into our program. Check back here for updates.

College scholarship opportunities for high school students

A hidden secret about the world of rowing is that there are many scholarship opportunities for those seeking to further their education at a collegiate level. We at G2 are here to help out with that opportunity. We’ve had many go on to row at University of Michigan, IU, Rutgers, Temple and others in the short time span we’ve been around. If you would like to be the next one to row at a collegiate level, come check us out during our seasons.
