G2 Rowing History:
From Glorious Gate to G2 Rowing

The Meaning Behind Our Name

The confluence of the three rivers in Fort Wayne was once described by the great Miami Chief Little Turtle as "The Glorious Gate." This natural wonder served as a vital strategic and commerce route for centuries. Our original name, Glorious Gate, was chosen to honor this heritage. Today, we operate as G2 Rowing, carrying that history forward into a new era of riverfront activity.

A Timeline of Growth

  • 2009: Founder John Hoham launches the first crew with students from Concordia High School, practicing on just three rowing machines.

  • 2010: We added our first boat, operating out of a trailer at Johnny Appleseed Park.

  • 2011: Fort Wayne is put "on the map" for rowing with our first test regatta featuring teams from Indianapolis and Cleveland.

  • 2014: G2 Rowing officially achieves 501(c)(3) non-profit status.

  • 2017–2019: We moved to our first physical building on the St. Marys River, which allowed our middle school and adaptive programs to flourish

  • 2020: Despite challenges, we held the first full-scale Row the Mauma Jo regatta.

  • 2021: The Summit City Sprints hosted over 400 athletes, proving our rivers are a world-class venue for competition.

The Legacy Continues

From a few students on rowing machines to a regional rowing destination, G2 Rowing continues to grow. Our alumni have gone on to row for prestigious programs at Purdue, Indiana University, Notre Dame, and Michigan—carrying the spirit of the "Glorious Gate" across the country.
